Our office received the following memorandum this morning from a major news source that we subscribe to.  They recommended that we pass it along to everyone who reads our blog.

As you read the following remember… this basic rule always applies: Do NOT give any personal information over the phone if you did not at least initiate the call.

Jury Duty Scam
This has been verified by the FBI (their link is also included below). Please pass this on to everyone in your email address book. It is spreading fast so be prepared should you get this call.

Most of us take those summonses for jury duty seriously, but enough people skip out on their civic duty, that a new and ominous kind of fraud has surfaced.

The caller claims to be a jury coordinator. If you protest that you never received a summons for jury duty, the scammer asks you for your Social Security number and date of birth so he or she can verify the information and cancel the arrest warrant. Give out any of this information and bingo; your identity was just stolen.

The fraud has been reported so far in 11 states, including Oklahoma , Illinois , and Colorado . This (swindle) is particularly insidious because they use intimidation over the phone to try to bully people into giving information by pretending they are with the court system. The FBI and the federal court system have issued nationwide alerts on their web sites, warning consumers about the fraud.

There is a lot of hype written on this subject and most of it is BS. Believe me. We’ve been designing websites for 4 years and have purchased our share of rip-off ebooks and programs promising to teach us how to make thousands of dollars overnight. And through it all we really only found one places that gave us the steps AND the tools to build a successful online business.
One of the most successful affiliate marketers is Rosalind Gardner who left her job as an air traffic controller in 1999 and went into this business. Her story of how she made $436,997 in 2002 is classic. Today she makes much more than that and you can too.

How do I know this is true? Because before we found her book we invested a ton of money in other plans and found out too late that the information was either outdated, much too complicated, or just plain untrue.

In Rosalind’s book she walks you through the steps of how to be a successful affiliate marketer. She will show you where to find affiliate companies, how to set up a website, and the whole nine yards as they say.

We hear words like credit score , bad credit, and credit cards every day, but if you are over 50 you remember a world without those things and we got by – somehow.

They are much more convenient than carrying wads of cash (not that I ever did) and it’s hard to imagine life without them. The credit card industry has evolved over the last 30 years, part of a long-term plan. And with the ease of using them now (just swipe and go!) it’s hard NOT to use one when you’re out shopping.

Since this is the world we live in you need to know how to get the most out of it by getting the best interest rates.

In the world of plastic you must have a good credit rating. Life is hard enough without adding unnecessary headaches. Pull your credit regularly and make sure that there’s nothing on your report that shouldn’t be.

Pay all your creditors bills on time and it’s best if you keep your credit debt at 20% to 30% of your limit.

Be careful not to acquire too many cards. You should have no more than two or three. This will keep your debt manageable. Most of the time when people get into financial trouble it’s because they have too many cards.

You need to make a good-faith effort to work things out. If you can’t solve the problem you can ask the company to investigate and solve the problem.

Note – if you used a debit card this law does not address that.

Using A Credit Card For Online Shopping Is Safer

The Fair Credit Billing Act also covers online purchases. Many people are still wary about shopping online. You don’t need to be. The industry has made a great effort to make online shopping safer and the sites that take credit cards use an encrypted method to make certain your numbers are safe. Of course we all know in this life nothing is certain except death and taxes, so theoretically it is not safe, but it is 99.9% safe – and that’s pretty safe.

Check your receipts the moment you receive your statement (just in case) for any errors.
